Dentures are a prosthetic replacement for some or all of your missing teeth. If you've been thinking about getting dentures, then you likely have some questions about them.
Westmount Dental Centre is a denture clinic in Edmonton, and our friendly Edmonton dentists are happy to help you understand the uses and benefits of wearing dentures as well as whether they are a good option for you.
Are Dentures Right for Me?
Dentures can be a great choice for just about anyone who is interested in restoring their smile. They are among the most affordable tooth replacement solutions, and modern tools and techniques can create dentures that look and function more naturally than ever before. There's no need to worry about looking like you're wearing "false teeth."
If you have missing teeth, then dentures are definitely one of the first options you should ask your dentist about. Though more typically worn by older adults who have lost their teeth due to periodontal disease, dentures are used by people of all ages. Dentures can restore your natural speech patterns and your ability to chew all of your favourite foods. They can also keep facial muscles from sagging and protect any remaining natural teeth.
What Are the Different Types of Dentures?
At the Westmount Dental Centre family dentist in Edmonton, we offer two main types of dentures:
1. Partial dentures are used when there are still some natural teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw. These dentures essentially fill in the gaps between the teeth, helping to keep them from shifting out of place.
2. Complete dentures are used to replace a full set of upper or lower teeth. A full set of complete dentures will replace all of the teeth. If complete dentures are chosen, then any remaining natural teeth will be removed.
Wearing and Caring for Your Dentures
Caring for dentures is relatively simple, straightforward, and won't take much of your time. You have to make sure to brush them at least once a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a proper denture cleaner. When you're not wearing your dentures, they'll need to be soaked so that they do not dry out and warp. Rinsing your dentures after eating is also a great way to keep your dentures and your oral health in good shape.
Dentures should be handled with care but, if do you ever break your dentures, don't worry. Just follow our guide for what to do if your dentures are broken.
