With so many new "smart" technologies available today, it was only a matter of time before a smart toothbrush such as the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected hit the market. The FlexCare uses motion tracking and a companion app to help you keep track of your brushing technique. At Westmount Dental Centre, our Edmonton dentists support any innovation which helps the people of Edmonton fight tooth decay and improve their brushing habits. Let's take a look at how this "smart" toothbrush may be able to promote healthy teeth and gums. The FlexCare connects to its companion app on your phone via Bluetooth. The sensors on the toothbrush inform the app about which areas of your mouth require more attention. It tracks where the toothbrush head is and how long it spends there. The app essentially acts as a guidance system which allows you to visually note where you are brushing well and where you could stand to do better. The sections are fairly broad and cannot pinpoint individual teeth, but do give you a range of teeth which you routinely underbrush. The app keeps track of how long you've been using your current brush head and when it needs to be replaced. The app also allows you to input additional information which is pertinent to your oral health, such as whether you have gum recession or other oral health problems. Based on this information and on the data collected while you brush, the app is capable of providing you with thousands of different personalized brushing tips. Don't forget, however, that the best oral health advice you can receive is always going to be from your Edmonton family dentist! Though a "smart toothbrush," the FlexCare looks and functions like a fairly standard electrical toothbrush and can operate at three different vibrations. If you've been using electric toothbrushes, you'll find the experience to be the same. The FlexCare has a large power button located on its handle, underneath which you'll find three LED lights which indicate the vibration level. Another set of three light further down indicate three different brushing modes, ranging from "Clean" to "Deep Clean." The lithium ion battery on the FlexCare can last about two weeks on a full charge. The Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected can be purchased through Amazon, Best Buy, and eBay.
